Background History[]

The Ulyanovsk (Russian: Улья́новск), Soviet designation Project 1143.7 was an aircraft carrier designated by the Soviet Union. It was their first class of nuclear powered supercarriers, and was intended to offer blue water naval aviation capability for the Soviet Navy. The ship was laid down during November 25, 1988; and was 40% complete by January 1991, but progress halted and the ship was scrapped thereafter.

The Ulyanovsk was based on the preceeding 1975 Project 1153 Orel, which did not pass the design stage.

Overview[]

Introducing players to tier 3 aircraft carriers, the Ulyanovsk serves as an important milestone for aircraft carrier players due to its capabilities at a cheap price. The ship offers players a glimpse of the power of the tier 3 aircraft carriers, introducing them to the mechanics of the higher tier battles for carriers.

The ship inherits the Russian tradition of arming the ship with various weapons, including missiles. This allows the ship to effectively function like a missile cruiser whilst maintaining its main purpose of an aircraft carrier.

During September 6, 2021; a poll was made concerning an overhaul of the ship's weaponry in the near future, with the majority of voters supporting the overhaul.

Tactics[]

Playing as an Ulyanovsk[]

This type of aircraft carrier is not made to camp or hide, but to move on combat. It's not like the USS Gerald R. Ford, Its role sometimes called Battle-Carrier or Super Destroyer because of its firepower.

Its lower health than any T3 aircraft carriers makes player might choose Gerald R. Ford, but most recommended to choose this than that. If you're lazy piloting aircrafts, just work like normal carriers, hide, and if it's time to 1v1 your enemy, if only you and the alone enemy, you could win 50/50 even fighting USS Massachusetts. Its air defense should help you destroying missiles coming at you, it is recommended to use lasers.

Always bear in mind that the ship is armed with missiles and grenade launchers. These weapons allow the ship an extra layer of defense against any encroaching surface ships and submarines.

Playing along an Ulyanovsk[]

With their low mobility, maneuverability, and large size; the Ulyanovsk will be an appealing target. Allied ships should work on maximizing the survivability of the ship, since its loss will be a large drawback.

Surface ships should ward off any opposing surface ships, with other aircraft carriers helping in their allied Ulyanovsk's air raids. Submarines should be on guard against other submarines that would threaten the ship.

Playing against an Ulyanovsk[]

The ship, with its many capabilities, also comes with disadvantages. The ship's large size will make it an easy target to any type of fire.

Ships should operate in an organized fleet whenever attempting to overthrow the Ulyanovsk. Their combined anti air defense will deny the ship any proper air strikes. The Ulyanovsk's lack of fighters will also allow opposing aircraft carriers a less dangerous chance to strike on an undefended ship.

Submarines also should try striking the ship from the distance, but be aware of any of Ulyanovsk's patrolling allies.

Suggested Armaments Setup[]

The ship, with its flexible armaments setup, can be armed with various weapons that will furthermore improve the ship's performance. Below are some suggested weapons setup. But, bear in mind that these are just suggestions.

Advantages and Disadvantages[]

Advantages[]

  • Comes equipped with 3 missile launchers.
  • Is also equipped with grenade launchers, allowing for defense against submarines.
  • High durability.
  • Strong anti air defense.
  • Has the most DPM out of all aircraft carriers, including those assault carriers.
  • Suitable for combat.

Disadvantages[]

  • Despite having a high health, it has the lowest on aircraft carriers.
  • Very large size, having the second largest in-game model dimensions, allowing for an easy strike from a distance.
  • Very low maneuverability, on par with the Shtorm.
  • Although strong, its anti air defense only consists of a single slot.
  • There is no slot for fighter aircraft.

Trivia[]

  • The ship's durability was increased from 241,800 to 292,500 during udapte 0.45.5, released on August 5, 2021. It was once again increased to 300,500 and its missile quantity was also increased from 2 to 3 in update 0.47.5; which was released globally on December 29, 2021. Now it has 390,650.
  • The ship was initially given the name Kremlin, but was later changed to Ulyanovsk, after the city of the same name.
  • The ship's 9th anti-air mount was discovered by the developers, lodged in the ships flight deck (as shown in the image at this page's gallery). It was removed in update 0.47.5.
  • The ship used to cost 11,600,000 dollars; but was increased to 16,200,000 on January 17, 2022.

In-game inaccuracies.

  • The in-game model is disproportionately larger than its historic size, even larger than the historically larger Gerald R. Ford.
  • The game's model is flipped, most notably its island superstructure which was designed by the Soviets to be on its starboard side . It was later remastered at February 2023 update.
  • The ship was designated to have far more artillery than the one depicted in game, but this may change in the forseable future. (I very hope it, it can be more efficient and give to players a reason to use it).
  • Despite it being an aircraft carrier, it can also help your team friends and move into combat instead hiding because of its insane amount of missiles, its role should be exactly like FS Ocean Avenger.
